At 5 weeks until our last frost, which is week ending April 7th, it’s too early to plant much in the garden. For us, getting even a few vegetables in the ground feels like an accomplishment and gets the gardening blood flowing.

This week was supposed to be the start of our outdoor direct sowing this year. Mother nature had other ideas bringing in a 3 days storm through the middle of the week that gave us a few inches of snow again.
Alas, all we have growing in our outdoor garden beds are, a few carrots that I left to overwinter for seeds, and couple of radishes that have started from seeds that fell to the ground last fall. We’ll have to wait yet another week to start what was planned.

Seed Starting:
We did start some “seeds” this week. As mentioned in last weeks article, we have been trying to find some organic ginger and turmeric to try growing that this year. We finally got our hands on some so it was time to get these in the ground.
Ginger and turmeric are both root crops. So naturally, they are grown the same way. Planted just under the surface of the soil producing green shoots with leaves during the growing season that bring in energy to make the root system grow bigger.
Ginger and turmeric are long season crops. In zone 5b our last frost is so late they need to be started indoors to have a hope of getting a good crop. We’ve started these in their own 10 inch pots. Allowing them to grow for 6-8 weeks before being transplanted.
Updates On Prior Seeds Started:
Unlike the peppers we started a few weeks ago. The tomatoes we started last week have all germinated with great success. About half of the tomato seeds we used were ones we’ve saved from last years crop.
Transplanting:
Basil was on the agenda to be transplanted this week, but once again life got in the way. Next week for sure!
Pruning:
No pruning was done this week.
Weather:
The weather was all over the place this week. Started off with a couple double digit mostly sunny days. Then came a “storm of the century” or so the weather man called it.
This storm turned out to be long lasting, about 3 days, but not very strong. We got a decent amount of rain that turned into about an inch of snow. The main issue with the storm is that it prevented us from direct sowing our first crops of the year.
At the end of the week we had probably the nicest day of 2024. It was about 17°C and sunny in the afternoon with a light breeze. Unfortunately we spent that day on a 4 hour drive home from visiting relatives.
Upcoming Next Week:
Basil needs to get transplanted, for sure. Our onions are still in 4 inch pots as well so it might be time for them to find a permanent home.
We’ll be direct sowing all of our veggies and the plan is to get started on building a new garden bed for flowers this year.
As usual, these plans are not set in stone and most likely something on this list will get pushed back to the next week.
