Winter is My Favorite Gardening Season

Yes, I said it.

I absolutely love summer when the garden is in full bloom. I love spring for the first crop harvest. I love fall for all the preserving abundance. But, in the dead of winter, after all the excitement from the holidays have past and we’ve suffered through a few weeks of cold winter boringness. Comes a tiny ray of light: it’s time to start seeds for the greenhouse and I couldn’t be happier.  There’s nothing quite like it, the excitement of starting your gardening season after months of waiting and not having fresh food you grew yourself.

Nature is Grounding and Sacred

There’s something blissful and grounding about taking out the dirt, pots, gardening tools and then smelling, feeling and seeing healthy soil again. It’s the same as entering the sun warmed greenhouse to prepare it for the upcoming season.

There are even articles written about the importance of grounding and touching soil. It provides microorganisms that help support our immune system and it helps remind us that we are part of the earth. Here’s a quick link to some benefits of touching soil: https://sustainablesoils.org/about-soils/soils-and-public-health.

In our busy day-to-day lives we all struggle with coming back to the body, back to nature. Gardening, (in my humble opinion), is the best embodiment method out there because it rewards you with life-sustaining food. But slowly getting back into the gardening season and touching soil, even taking care of our livestock helps with that embodiment of coming back to nature. There’s something uniquely sacred about planting your seeds and watching the little sprout emerge from the soil and start growing. Knowing that in a few short months, you’ll have your own food that you’ve grown to feed your family. After not having this for months, it’s a wonderful feeling.
